Abstract
558,882. Recovering magnesium from sea water. AFRICAN SISAL & PRODUCE CO., Ltd., WALSH, C. L., and BROWNE, R. J. March 10, 1943, No. 2479/42. [Classes 1 (i) and 1 (iii)] Magnesium is recovered from sea water by removing the carbonates and bicarbonates, converting the magnesium chloride into magnesium hydroxide by the addition of lime, adding a dilute pectic sol. extracted from vegetable matter with a sodium or potassium alkaline salt, to flocculate and precipitate the hydroxide and separating the precipitate. Preferably the pectic sol is obtained by treating the flesh of sisal or other member of the agave family, as described, for example, in Specifications 517,729, 532,877 and 539,602, [all in Group V], 150-200 parts by weight of a ¢ per cent. solution per 100,000 parts of sea water being used. The carbonates and bicarbonates may be precipitated as calcium carbonate by the addition of lime and flocculation of the precipitate accelerated by means of a pectic salt.
