Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-quality heavy water by adding a strongly alkaline substance to electrolytically concentrated heavy water to be rectified for removing electrolytes from the heavy water.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of heavy water or in the regeneration of recovered heavy water, a strongly alkaline substance, e.g., sodium hydroxide, or potassium hydroxide, is added to electrolytically concentrated heavy water and then the heavy water is subjected to rectification, whereby traces of acid carbonates present in an alkaline metal carbonate used in electrolysis are neutralized with the strongly alkaline substance added and made more alkaline. When the heavy water so treated is rectified, a high-quality heavy water having small specific electrolyzing degree can be obtained.
