Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out simply regeneration treatment without promoting the deterioration of membrane by carrying out the regeneration treatment under condition under which pH is not lowered to less than 6 in the electrolysis of alkali metal salts by an ion exchange membrane process.
CONSTITUTION: In the electrolysis of alkali metal salts by an ion exchange membrane process, the surface of the ion exchange membrane faced an anode and having an increased electric resistance, is contacted with a solution of more than pH6, preferably pH7 to 10. The surface of the membrane faced a cathode is contracted with below 1N preferably below 0.5N solution of an aqueous caustic alkali solution. In order to conduct this procedure more effectively, it is preferred to slightly apply direct current of preferably 0.003 to 0.3A/dm2 under the condition described above in the same divection as that in the electrolysis, whereby the ion membrane can be regenerated more rapidly.
