Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the voltage and current efficiency of alkali chloride electrolytic bath by the procedure in which dried cationic exchange membrane is attached to an electrolytic bath, and after making preliminary electrolysis with microcurrent, normal current is applied.
CONSTITUTION: In the beginning of operation of an electrolytic bath, a dried cathionic exchange membrane is attached to the electrolytic bath and then preliminary electrolysis is performed by application of a microcurrent corresponding to approx. one-several hundredth of the current density used in normal operation. After a difinite time, electrolysis is soon started by application of normal current. Thus, no high voltage flows and good voltage and current efficiency can be maintained even if long-term operation is continued.
