558,848. Photo-electric scale-reading devices. SOC. GENEVOISE D'INSTRUMENTS DE PHYSIQUE. Dec. 4, 1941, No. 15657. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1940. [Class 40 (iii)] In an apparatus for determining by photoelectric means the position of a movable part, a graduation of precision fixed on the movable part is made to act as an optical grid, and a source of light is provided to project an image of this grid through another grid to a photoelectric cell in order to permit automatic stopping of the movable part in a predetermined position at the instant of coincidence of the grids. As shown in Fig. 1, the scale 2 constituting the first grid is situated against the second grid 1, and both grids are between the lamp 3 and the photoelectric cell 5. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the scale 2 is illuminated from the lamp 3 through lenses 10 and by reflection from a mirror 11, and the illuminated scale is projected by lens 12 on the second grid 1, beyond which is situated the photo-electric cell 5. In a modification of this the mirror 11 is omitted and the lamp 3 with the lenses 10 is situated like the lamp 3 of Fig. 1, below the scale 2. The scale 2 may comprise regularly spaced groups 14a, Fig. 4, of irregularly spaced lines. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 506,322 and 513,654.
