Abstract

558,633. Fastenings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., LEVY, M. M., and HEATH, G. A. July 10. 1942, No. 9604. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXIV] Consists in a quick-release coupling between a control knob and its spindle whereby the knob may be readily attached and removed without the aid of tools. The knob 3, Fig. 2, has a central bore to receive the end of the spindle 1 which is formed with a flat 1.1 and opposite thereto an inclined flat portion or ramp 1.3 between which and the spindle proper is a reduced neck portion 1.2. A plate 2 secured by screws 2.2 to the knob 3 has a central aperture the same shape as the end of the spindle the chord portion of this aperture being bevelled to engage the ramp. To remove the knob, it is pushed forward until plate 2 is over the neck 1.2 and then rotated until the chord portion is opposite the flat 1.1 when the knob will be thrown off by the spring 5. In a modification, Fig. 8, the bore in the knob is enlarged to receive the head 1A.1 of a screw fixed to the spindle. A plate 2 has a central aperture and two lateral slots 2. 3 of which the latter is bevelled to engage the tapered head 1A.1. To attach the knob, the slot 2 is brought opposite the head and the knob pushed on until the head lies in front of the plate. The knob is then rotated until the head is opposite the slot when the spring will urge the knob rearwardly for the slot 2A.3 to engage the tapered head. In a further modification, Fig. 13, a wire spring S is adapted to drop behind the head 1A.1 to lock the knob. A projecting loop S1 of the spring enables the spring to be removed from its locking position.
