Abstract

556,626. Motor power plant; cylinders, cooling. LARKIN, E. E. May 1, 1942, No. 5917. Addition to 544,816 [Group XXVI]. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a power plant in which the exhaust from an internal-combustion engine 10 is supplied along a path 22, 30 to and from a boiler 24 for vaporizing liquid fuel to be used expansively in an engine or turbine 38 for generating power and then condensed, at least part of the condensate is returned to the boiler along a second path distinct from the first, and fuel-supply means 18 is arranged to supply to the engine 10 a liquid fuel of greater specific gravity than the fuel vaporized in the boiler. As shown, the exhaust from the engine 10 passes through tubes 26 in the boiler 24 to an outlet pipe 30. Light fuel vaporized in the boiler is conveyed by a pipe 34 to the turbine 38 and thence through a water-cooled condenser 42 to a receiver 50 having a float-controlled inlet 54 for make-up fuel. A pump 58 conveys fuel from the receiver through a pipe 62 and the cylinder jacket 16 of the engine to an outlet pipe 64 surrounding the exhaust pipe 22. Branches 66, 68 leading respectively to the boiler 24 and to the condenser 42 are controlled by connected valves 70, 72 actuated from a float 76 in the boiler, so that the liquid is partly supplied to the boiler and partly bypassed to the condenser. Heavy fuel is normally supplied to the engine 10 from a supply pipe 96 by a pump 18 and injection device 20 ; a two-way rotary valve 88 enables the heavy fuel to be replaced wholly or partly by light fuel from the pipe 62 through a connection 86.
