Abstract

555,527. Telephone instruments ; switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 28, 1942, No. 4175. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1941. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The switch contacts of a telephone sub-set are so arranged in relation to a magnetic circuit which traverses the receiver and the base portion when the receiver is carried by the latter as to be operated by the change of magnetic flux which occurs when the receiver is removed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the magnetic circuit is formed by soft-iron members 7, 8, a magnet 9, and the reeds 11, 12 of a magnetically-operated switch, all arranged in the support 5, together with a soft-iron member 6 in the hand-set 1. When the latter is laid on the support, as shown, part of the magnetic flux which otherwise passes through the reeds 11, 12 and causes them to close the contacts is diverted through the path which is completed by the member 6, thus causing the switch to open. In one modification the magnet bridges the lower ends of the members 7, 8 and the switch the upper ends, and in another the members 7, 8 are replaced by magnets, a softiron bar bridges their lower ends, and the switch occupies the position shown of the magnet 9. Other forms comprise a bar magnet and the switch, arranged one in the hand-set and the other in the support so that when the hand-set rests on the latter the magnet and switch are in close parallel relationship, causing the switch contacts to close. In the form shown in Fig. 5, in which the hand-set hangs on the support, a mercury type magnetic switch 28 is arranged between soft-iron pole pieces 29, 30 on a magnet 25, and a soft-iron member 6 in the hand-set diverts a portion of the flux through itself and through auxiliary polepieces 26, 27 when the hand-set is hung up, thus causing the contacts to open. Several switches may be operated sequentially by using switches of different sensitivities, or by locating them differently in the magnetic circuit.
