' The invention relates to telephone "substation devices '"which combine a spee'ch 'current transformer and'a polarized"alternating-current alarm to 'a' singleunit.
It is "an object of the inventionto'devise such units in such a manner that it'is "capable of performing its double .iunctions without either function impairing the other, i. epsubstahtialhr without lossintransforming efficiency and without diminution of'the alarm sensitivity.
"To this end, and .in accordance with the invention, the transformer windings and the alarm or "ringer'windings are mounted on a common magnetizable core with an air gap, and the core ends "adjacent thegapior'm also an equipolar pair'of'pole shoes for one poleof.a, polarizing magnet whose other pole carries an armature movable in'the air gap- "In such a device, the. permanent' flux; and theoperating flux of theco il windingsoverlap practically in theair. gap only. .Owingtothe separation of v permanent flux and .operating 'fiux of the exciting coil, .the .magnetio circuit ofthe coilcan be .designedifor minimum loss; which produces favorable transformingconditions for speech-current when theexcitingcoil is used as a transformer.
These and other objects'and. featureswill be apparent from. the. following .description in conjunction with the embodiments of .the .-.invention exemplified by the drawingsin which gTFi'gfll shows theplan view and.pig...2.-a-.side elevation of a devicein whicha one piece :exciting coil arranged .in the longitudinalzdirection of the air gap; "Fig. 3.shows .a .paniview and Fig. 4a side elevation of another device in which acne-piece exciting coil is arranged transversally to the air gap; Fig. shows an embodiment with a two-part exciting "coil'in which the two coil parts are arranged in symmetrical relationship to the air gap and'the armature is ar-- ranged between the two coilparts; and Fig. '6 shows the=wiring diagram of a 1381615110118 substation equipped with a device according to the invention.
.In Figs. 1 and"2fthe two arm. ends land 3 of the .coil 'core 4 which are separated fromveach otherlby the air gap I, formanequipolar pair ofgpole shoes of the permanent magnet v5. The arm. ends are firmly screwed toa piece ofsoft iron 6'which is.fastened to an assembly plate .I-of nonemagnetizable material. The plate -1--also carries the magnetB and two bell domes 8 and 9 arranged excentrically one inside" the other. Attachedto the other pole end "of the permanent magnet-aretwo pieces of soft iron I!) s milarito pole shoes .attached by screws t2 which also holds. spring member II. A rigid armature I3 iswvelded to'member H at point. The-armature is therefore capable of resilient reciprocal motionwithin-the-"air gap. Whenthe "coil 15, mounted oncored,"is excited by' alternatingpurrent, the armature I3 is "actuated and transmits its oscillations'viathe alarm 'clapper'l6"to"the bell domes 8 and"9.
"In'the device of Figs."3 and '4'theairjgap 3|"is formed by'thetwd-arm-ends "Hand 33 of'th'e coilcore "34 which "again? form an equipolar pair of pole shoesof the permanentmagnet 35. This permanent magnet .and the piece of soft iron '36 are secured to'the assemblyplate .31,"which"also carries the two bell domes 38"and'39. The armature-43 is made inherently resilient by weakeningit at'the point44 byinotches. its. end remoteiromthe'air'gap'is broadened and rigidly connected to the second pole end '4l by Ithe screws "42. The "coil "45" is arranged transversally to the'airjgap'and located below thepolarizing magnetsystem. The .armature, when excited, transmits its oscillations 'via'the clapper to the bell domes 38 and 39.
In the device of Fig. 5 two exciting coils 65a and 65b are arranged in symmetrical relationship .to the 'air gap '5! and'have acommon iron core 54 whose two arm ends 52and' 53form the air gap. Thepolarizing magnet system consists of apermanent'magnet 55, a connecting piece56 between the iron core and the permanent magnet, and an armature 1'63 rendered inherently resilient by'notches (i l. The broadened end 60 of armature 63.is rigidly connectedby screws 62 to the "permanent magnet 55 as in the embodiment accordingto Figs..3.and.4. .The arrangement or the armature between the .two exciting coilsgives a very compact design tothe coiland permanent magnet system. .A'hemispherical bell dome 58 covers this wholesystemand is struck at a' recess 59bythe clapper'fi'fi mounted on.the armature 63.
The circuit according 'to Fig. .6 is shownin condition" to receiveincomingcalls. .Three .coil windings H) I ,i Inland i03=are woundin the same direction and have .a .common iron .core I04. The'two arms ends "MI and M2 of this iron. core, which areseparated by the .airgap l40,.orm an equipolar ,pair of pole shoes .ofthe permanent magnetl43. The resilient armature I44, which is. connected to the.other.pole..end...ofthe permanent magnet by, apieceoiisof-tiron M5,. is. movable in. the airgap- I40.
In the illustrated condition, the direct-current is .cut off by .a. condenser. 1.05 connected in series to the coil. When alternating -.al arm voltage 1 is received across terminals I09, I ltlyfrom the exchange, .the tarmature is excited and xthe =SU.b-.
scriber is alarmed. When the receiver is picked up, the hook contact l H closes and connects the microphone I06 parallel to a circuit consisting of the series connection of winding l! and condenser I05, while the hook contact H2 connects a circuit consisting of the series connection of receiver i0! and condenser Hi8 parallel to winding I02. This establishes the speech connection. The copper resistance of winding l0! and the resistance of winding I02 may beutilized for side-tone reduction. The microphone feed current, which flows through. the windings B02 and 103, premagnetises the coil core 100, so that the armature is not excited by the speech currents. In the case of automatic dialling, a short-circuit connection in which the dialling impulse contact I I4 is arranged, is built up in the usual way between the line connections by the short-circuit contact H3 of the dial.
-The invention is also applicable for local battery systems. It is then of advantage to use a substation circuit with an auto-transformer. If no auto-transformer is used, it may be necessary to obtain the series connection of the various transformer windings for the speech currents by means that the polarizing magnet flux due to said mag net and the variable coreflux due to said winding's are mutually superimposed substantially only in said air gap.
5. A telephone substation device, comprising a substantially ring-shaped transformer core having an air gap and having two end portions facing eachother across said gap, a substation circuit having alarm control windings and speechcurrent transformer windings series connected with each other and disposed on said core away from said'end portions, a permanent magnet having two pole ends, the first of said pole ends having two mutually spaced pole parts rigidly joined with said respective core end portions, the second pole end being magnetically spaced from said core, and an alarm actuating armature member mounted on said second pole end and extending through said gap, said armature being elastically movabl relative to said core and magnet.
6. A telephone substation device, comprising a generally annular transformer core having an air gap and having two end portions facing each other across said gap, a permanent magnet having two pole ends, the first of said pole ends having two pole parts joined with said two respective core end portions, the second pole end being magnetically spaced from said core, two coil units comprising alarm control windings and speechcurrent transformer windings and being mounted on said core away from said pole parts and symmetrically with respect to said air gap, and an windings on the common iron core, one serving as the exciting coil for the alarm bell while the other represents the transformer. This results in a substation circuit similar to that usual in conventional telephon set circuits.
We claim as our invention:
