887,026. Electromagnetic switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 28, 1958 [Dec. 3, 1957], No. 38478/58. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a cross-bar switch having so-called " reed contacts " of magnetic material operable by flux flowing therethrough, the two reeds forming a contact set are magnetically connected respectively to horizontal yokes N10 . . . N19 and vertical yokes N1 . . . N9, each yoke (such as N10) having an individual pair of coils (such as B10, B11, Fig. 3) and each group of yokes is provided with holding coils 11, 12 and 13, 14 respectively which surround the corresponding individual coils. The holding coils are permanently energized to produce a flux insufficient to operate any of the contacts, but capable of holding contacts once they are operated. Operation of a pair of contacts is effected by reinforcing the holding flux with a further flux by energizing the corresponding individual horizontal and vertical coils. This further flux is insufficient to operate the reed contacts by itself. Release is effected by energizing these coils in the reverse direction. Electrical connections may be established through the yokes, which may be insulated from the main magnetic frame 1 by means of ferrite bushings (not shown); or ferrite bushings may be provided in the yokes at the points where they are joined by the reeds, individual electrical connections being made to the reeds. The individual reed contacts may be enclosed in a casing filled with inert gas.
