Abstract

555,386. Coating machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation.). Feb. 14, 1942, No. 1997. [Class 95] A machine for applying a coating to an edge face of a shoe sole S comprises a pair of driven feed rolls 10, 12, arranged to grip opposite surfaces of the work-piece and to move it lengthwise with its edge face in engagement with the ink-applying roll 14 which is supplied from an ink receptacle 16. The feed roll axes are each inclined to the other, and also inclined to the axis of the ink-applying roll, and lie in a plane which is offset with respect to the axis of the applying roll. The feed rolls 10, 12 have end faces 18, 20,.inclined at an acute angle to the roll axes. The conical surface of the roll 10 is toothed, to bite into the flesh surface of the sole S, and the roll 12, made of rubber, is yieldingly urged towards the sole by a spring 54. The ink-applying roll 14 may be composed of a granular material, e.g. an emery stone, so that its surface provides a large number of inkholding cavities, or it may be provided with a patterned cover, to produce an ornamental effect on the work. A raised shoulder 64 may be provided when it is desired to apply ink to the marginal face also of the workpiece. The applying roll 14 is shown mounted on arms 68, pivoted at 74 and urged upwardly by springs 76, and it may be adjusted longitudinally and laterally of the machine. A scraper plate 88 may be provided.
