795,635. Woodworking: polishing. ZACHERTZ, W., [trading as SCHMALTZ KOMM.- GES., GEB.]. Aug. 17, 1956 [April 20, 1956], No. 25229/56. Classes 60 and 145. A woodworking machine for the treatment of a surface of a workpiece comprises one or more rotatable and axially-reciprocatable finishing rolls which are obliquely arranged relatively to the direction of feed of the workpiece and have their cutting surfaces extending substantially parallel to their axes of rotation. A workpiece, which may be of laminated parquetry form, is fed to the machine through an inlet end 9 and conveyed by feed rollers 2 successively to one or more planing rolls 3, an obliquely-arranged finishing roll 4 and one or more obliquelyarranged polishing rolls 5. The axial movement to the finishing roll is imparted by a rotatable eccentric shaft which engages a groove in a non-rotatable axially-movable sleeve carrying the spindle of the finishing roll. The polishing rolls 5 may also be axially reciprocated. Spring- urged pressure bars 6 are provided for holding the workpiece in contact with the finishing roll 4 and polishing rolls 5. The lower, polished surface of the workpiece slides on the table 19 and serves as a reference surface for subsequent profiling operations on the side faces of cutters 7' The planing roll 3, operating on the upper surface of the workpiece, has cutters for forming two longitudinal grooves which can subsequently be given dovetailed form by rotatable cutters 8. Spraying and drying means may also be provided for effecting pre-sealing of the polished surface.
