Abstract

557,820. Pile fabrics. BEHR-MANNING CORPORATION. June 3. 1842, No. 7565. Conventian date, June 4, 1941. [Class 140] A layer of pile forming material, such as flock. is weakly secured by adhesive to an advancing transfer sheet or surface, and the layer is transferred to an advancing backing sheet having a coat of stronger adhesive on its surface by bringing the coating into contact with the layer. Loose flock material 10 is delivered to a feed belt 15 passing through an electrostatic field of some 40,000 volts between electrodes 17, 18. A tranfer apron 22 coated with weak adhesive by a roller 26 passes over the upper earthed electrode and receives oriented flock particles, those not adequately secured being removed by a suction conduit 32 opposite a beater 31. The apron passes over a convex platform 35 in contact with a sheet of backing material 40 coated with a stronger adhesive spread by a doctor blade 44. The backing material is pressed against the oriented particles by an endless band 46, adjustable rollers determining the pressure and ensuring that the sheets 22, 40 shall approach each other in the course of their travel over the platform. A large transfer drum may be substituted for the apron 22. Suitable adhesives are described comprising glycerine and rubber latex respectively.
