Abstract

455,639. Granule coated webs. ABBEY, A., 111, Hatton Garden, London.- (Carborundum Co. ; Niagara Falls, New York, U.S.A.) April 25, 1935, No. 12465. [Class 60] Apparatus for making granule-coated webs of paper or fabric comprises at least two superposed electrodes to which a high potential difference is applied, at least one of which is formed with means to prevent arcing, means for feeding on adhesive-coated web between the electrodes and means for supplying granules between the web and the lower electrode so that the granules are electrostatically projected against the downwardly facing adhesive surface of the web. The upper electrode may be made of good conducting material, e.g. metal or carbon and the lower, at least at that part adjacent the upper electrode, of poorly conducting material. A web P, Fig. 1, passes from a roll 12 between printing rolls 4, 5 and thence over idler rolls 7, 8 and 9 between roll 11, which applies adhesive from a trough 12, and roll 13 and then between a drum 15 and brush 16 which evenly distributes the adhesive. The coated web is then guided by idler rolls 18, 19, 21 into the electric field between electrodes 23, 24. Granules are distributed from a hopper 35 on to an endless belt 41 which moves through the electric field parallel to the web P. Air from a blower 48 is blown on to the web to set the adhesive and the web is finally passed round idler roll 49 and suction drums 51, 52 to a drying rack 55. The lower electrode is made of wood or of fibrous material bonded with synthetic resin. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a metal plate 62 is placed between pieces of wood 60, 61. Glass may also be used for the lower part 60. The lower electrodes 23 are supported on a frame 63 hung from a support 28 by hangers 64 of hard rubber. The upper electrode 24 is supported by adjustable screws 29, 30. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, a plate 65 of poorly-conducting material is provided with legs 66 of similar material and metal lugs 67.
