Abstract
518,833. Abrasive coated sheet material. TENNANT, W. J., (Carborundum Co.). Sept. 5, 1938, No. 25972. [Class 60] Abrasive coated sheet material is made by attaching abrasive granules to a backing by means of adhesive, projecting a powdered adhesive on to the granule coated surface before the adhesive has set and simultaneously curing or setting both adhesives. The powdered adhesive may be projected or dispersed by means of an electrostatic field or by means of air under pressure. The adhesives may be heat hardenable phenol-formaldehyde condensation products. As shown in Fig. 1 paper or cloth 11 is coated with liquid adhesive by rolls 13, 14 and abrasive granules are applied from a hopper 17, Powdered adhesive from a receptacle 21 falls by gravity on to the abrasive coated web and is dispersed by the electrostatic field between a positively charged plate electrode 24 and a pair of negatively charged pipe or rod electrodes 26, 27. The'adhesives are then cured by passing the web through an electrically heated chamber 29. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the abrasive granules are orientated during application by projecting them upwardly on to the adhesive coated web 32 by means of a feed belt 42 which is vibrated by rotating cams 48. Powdered adhesive from a receptacle 52 is carried on a feed belt 53 below the web and is dispersed by the negatively charged electrodes 58, while a positively charged electrode 59 above the' web attracts the particles into engagement with the granule coated surface. In the finished products the tips of the abrasive granules are free from adhesive. Specification 473,619 is referred to.
