Abstract
555,294. Washing-machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 28, 1942, No. 1177. Convention date, Jan. 30. 1941. [Class 138 (ii)] In a washing machine, a reciprocatory agitator has a hollow body with perforations 11 on the upper surface and apertures 18 on the lower surface fitted with resilient flaps 19. secured at their inner ends by a clamping ring 20, to prevent entry of liquid on the downward stroke. Thus with the liquid entering the upper perforations 11 on the up stroke and flowing freely through the apertures 18 the circulation will be as shown by the arrows. The agitator is fixed to the upper end of a shaft 7 by a nut 12 enclosed in a cover 13 snapped on. The shsft is reciprocated rapidly through a short stroke such as two to three hundred times a minute at a one to two inches stroke and results in a sliding and rubbing of clothes as at 21b on the perforated top surface. A hollow port 3 attached by flange 4 and nut 5 to the bottom of the tub affords a sliding bearing 6 at the top for the shaft 7 and 14 at the bottom for the agitator.
