840,518. Washing machines. ROTHENBERGER, J. Oct. 25, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 33321/57. Class 138 (2). A washing machine with at least one cylinder, a heating device, and an open overflow is used in a process in which the water supply is continuous while wetting and rinsing, and intermittent during the washing part of the cycle. As shown, during the wetting period A the solenoid controlled water supply valve is fully on (Fig. 6) while an electric heater is off (Fig. 7). At the beginning of the washing cycle B, the rotation of a cam 20 changes over contacts 21, de-energizing the solenoid valve and energizing the water heater. When the water reaches its working temperature, which may be 50- 100‹ C. for goods to be boiled, 40-60‹ C. for coloureds and 30-40‹ C. for woolens and manmade fibres, contacts 21 are again reversed and for a short interval the heater is turned off and the cold water supply is turned on. Regular reversal of contacts 21 is effected by cam 20 for the rest of the washing period of the cycle, alternately actuating the fresh water solenoid and the heater. During the rinse stage C, the heater is off and the water supply is on. After rinsing there may be provision for a spin-drying period. The Specification also includes (Fig. 5, not shown) a brief description of a machine which comprises a horizontal cylinder rotating in an enclosed tank, provided with a supply of fresh water controlled by a ball float valve to ensure constant pressure.
