A washing machine has provision for suction drying by means of a nozzle 40 located adjacent the perforated rotary drum of the machine and has, .between the nozzle and extractor motor 35 a suds trap 39 which prevents soap suds from the drum reaching the extractor motor and also can be used to condense steam during the drying process. The machine is filled by hot and cold water through an inlet valve 20, the water entering through a detergent holder 24. The perforated drum is driven by a motor 12 as is a turbine pump 15 in the draining system. The sump is opened and closed by a solenoid controlled valve 32 and a exit trap 33 is provided. A separator 37 is provided to separate air from water during drying, the water passing out through a check valve to the turbine pump 15. During washing the suds trap 39 is filled with water via a pipe 43 to prevent suds escaping from the drum and during drying air is blown by the motor 35 over a heater element 42 and when clothes cover the nozzle 40 a suction effect is produced in the suds trap 39 which draws in steam and water from the clothes. The steam is condensed by the cold water entering through the pipe 43 and the water and hot air are separated in the separator 37, the air being recirculated by the motor 35. Bleach and rinse agent are added from containers 27 and 28 at appropriate times in the washing cycle and these are controlled by a central programming device operated from a timer motor.
