Abstract

1,112,340. Washing-machines. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. 5 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 44534/66. Heading D1A. [Also in Division F4] A washing machine which also dries by suction applied by a nozzle 40 against the side of a perforated drum 11 has a turbine pump 15 in the drain conduit to pump out water produced in the drying operation, the interior of the pump being connected to a water-air separator 37 by a gas-bleed tube 45 to prevent air locks in the turbine pump. The turbine pump is driven by an electric motor 12 which also drives the perforated drum. Hot and cold water is admitted through a valve 20 and enters through a detergent container 24. A suds trap 39 is provided to prevent excess suds passing to the separator 37 and reaching the extractor blower motor 35. This trap is kept filled by a water inlet pipe 43 and during drying the water is used to condense the steam produced. Water and air are separated in the separator 37 and the water passes a check valve and is pumped out through the turbine pump 15. Air is recirculated by the extractor motor and blower 35 and passes over a heater 42 before entering the washing drum. Bleach and rinse agent are admitted at appropriate times in the cycle by a central programme control device. The interior of the pump is shown in fig. 2 and has a shaped internal cavity 51 and an air bleed 56 near the outlet end of the internal cavity.
