Abstract

799,859. Washing and drying machines. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION, [formerly WHIRLPOOL-SEEGER CORPORATION] Nov. 12, 1956 [Nov. 17, 1955], No. 34540/56. Class 138 (2). A clothes washing machine 20 (Fig. 1) having a container 22, provided with a curved bottom wall 23 and a sump 24, inside which is mounted a perforated rotatable wash-basket 26 the rear wall 27 of which is connected to a shaft 28 driven by motor 66 through pulleys 67 and 38 linked by belt 68a, is fitted with a door 47. Fresh water is supplied through inlet 49 into the rotating washbasket, passes through the perforations in the basket into sump 24 where it is heated by heater 73 (Fig. 2) and is then removed by pump 61 to be returned to the wash-basket as a spray through nozzle 52. The spray extends across the basket and wets the clothes in quadrant I (Fig. 2) of the basket which rotates in an anticlockwise direction and raises the clothes into quadrant III from where they fall into quadrant IV to be wetted by fresh liquid supplied by nozzle 52. Articles are dried, first by centrifugal extraction and then by tumbling in a current of hot air obtained by circulating air, heated by passage over the electric heater 70, through the rotating wash-basket by an inlet opening 71 in the rear wall 36 and louvred outlet openings 72 formed in the front wall 42 which lead to the duct 41.
