Abstract
799,445. Washing-machines. WHIHLPOOL CORPORATION, [formerly WHIRLPOOL-SEEGER CORPORATION]. April 27, 1956 [May 17, 1955], No. 13022/56. Class 138 (2). A washing machine comprises a cabinet 11 enclosing a storage tank 15 and a tub 12, the tub containing a receptacle 20 for clothes to be washed, and means are provided for pumping liquid alternatively to the tube from the tank and to the tank from the tub. The pumping means comprises a reversible pump 16 arranged to be reversed automatically during the sequential operation of the machine. The pump 16 is connected to two solenoid-operated two-way valves 17, 19. The valve 17 has connections 65, 51 to the tub 12 and tank 15 respectively, and the valve 19 has a connection 50 to the tank 15 and also leads to a drain outlet 53. Liquid is pumped from the tank to the tub at the begining of a washing cycle and from the tub to the tank at the end of the cycle. The pump is arranged to be connected to the drain outlet 53 during rinsing and extracting cycles. The tank 15 has an overflow outlet 54 and manually operable control means are provided so that rinse water can be pumped from the tub 12 to the tank 15 to flush liquid therefrom through the overflow outlet. After the tub 12 has been drained a change-over of the valves 17, 19 is effected to drain the tank 15 through the connection 51, valve 17, pump 16, valve 19 and drain outlet 53. An agitator 30 within the receptacle 20 is arranged to be oscillated during the washing cycle and part of the rinsing cycle. The receptacle 20 is arranged to be rotated during the extracting operation. An electric immersion heater 66 in the tank 15 is under manual control, and an immersion or external heater 69 for the tube 12 is automatically energized whenever the agitator 30 is in operation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 783,940 and 785,867.
