821,582. Washing-machines. FERMOR, A. J. April 18, 1958 [April 26, 1957], No. 13322/57. Class 138 (2). A washing-machine has a central vertical tube 8 sealed at its top end and adapted to direct radial jets of washing or rinsing fluid under pressure from a pump 1 to penetrate without swirling or agitating the articles, the jet holes 14 being arranged spirally around tube 8. An immersion heater 11 may be included in the tube 8 in addition to any heaters that may be inserted in the channel or sump 5; while a rotatable sleeve 15 may be fitted for closing unwanted jets near the top of the tube when the machine is only partially filled. As shown, the suction side of the pump 1 is connected via a branch fitting 3 to the outlets 4 in the sump 5; a two-way valve 6 in the pump delivery pipe 7 allows wash liquor to be led either to the jet tube 8 for the pressure washing, or to the drain pipe connection 9 for rinsing and for finally emptying the washing container. Alternatively rinsing can be effected by continuously running in fresh water, the pump maintaining its circulation through the clothes and the surplus rinsing water leaving by adjustment of the outlet valve which would be fully opened to empty. The connection from pump to jet tube may be made in the side of the latter, as shown at 17, Fig. 2, particularly when a heating element 11 is used.
