A washing-machine having a pump for emptying the washing liquid container through a delivery pipe 20 is provided with means for introducing disinfectant or deodorant material into any residue of liquid not delivered from the pipe 20. In the example shown the pipe 20 is connected to a chamber 24 containing a block 25 of deodorant which is progressively softened by liquid flowing through a central bore 35 in the block. When the container is empty the pump is stopped and the residual liquid in the pipe 20 flows back into the pump and a sump below the container. The dissolved deodorant keeps this liquid hygienic. A bracket 26 for supporting one end of a wringer has a hollow elbow 28 the horizontal part 29 of which receives a flexible outlet hose (not shown). The bracket 26 has a screwed connection with the top 32 of the chamber 24, the chamber 24 and top 32 having a bayonet connection 33. In another example (not shown) the deodorant chamber is connected to the delivery pipe through a branch passage, and a venting valve allows air to leave the chamber so that liquid can enter it, but is closed by a float when the chamber is full of liquid. The valve opens again when liquid ceases to be delivered so that the liquid in the chamber can then flow back into the delivery pipe and pump.
