A washing machine with an anti-foam seal comprises a wash tank 11, a sealing cover, water feed means 19 including a line interrupter 21 and, downstream thereof, a unidirectional valve 22 openable by the feed water flow, substantially vertical tubular means 27 adjacent the tank 11 and in communication at the bottom with the tank and at the top with the atmosphere, and means 29 with an upper end communicating with the space in the tank 11 above the normal water level 32 and a lower end 31 arranged inside the tubular means 27 and below the normal water level 31. In use foam from a detergent passes through the tube 29 and into the water in the means 27 where it is dissolved. The depth H of the end 31 below the water surface 32 of 6 cm is insufficient to materially affect the operation of a water level control pressure switch. The machine further comprises a feed water inlet (20) (Fig. 2 not shown) feeding a feed pipe (26), for filling the tank via the line interrupter 21 and the tubular means 27, and the feed pipe 19 which directs water through the line interrupter or space 21 and the valve 22 to a detergent distribution tank 24 from which the liquid passes through an opening (25) (Fig. 1, not shown) to the wash tank 11. Water is discharged from the tank 11 by a pump (14) through a tube (15) and the tubular means 27 communicates with an overflow passage (28).
