[Class 125 (ii)] A bottle-filling machine of the counterpressure type is provided with a chamber 6 independent of the liquid reservoir 5 and adapted to receive the gases returned from the bottles, with any fob that may be present with the gases. The pressures in the chamber 6 and in the reservoir 5 are substantially the same. The filling heads 13 are mounted directly on the lower part of the reservoir 5, and the gas supplies 16 and returns 17 from the filling heads are connected to the independent chamber 6. A wire mesh grid 24 is provided for breaking up the fob, which collects in the chamber 6 and is drained off into a receptacle 23 provided with a drib-cock 40 and snift valve 42. A gas port 7 connects the chamber 6 with the reservoir 5 and allows a flow of gas from the reservoir to the chamber. The liquid level and the gas pressure in the reservoir may be controlled by a bell float as described in Specification 487,875. In a modification, the independent chamber has a vertical partition extending nearly to the bottom of the chamber, and water extends up to or above the bottom of the partition to form a water seal. The counterpressure exit from the chamber to the filling heads is positioned on one side of the partition, while the return gas inlet is disposed on the other side of the partition.
