Abstract
354,896. Refrigerating. ELECTROLUX, Ltd., 153, Regent Street, London.- (Platen-Munters Refrigerating System Aktiebolag; 2, Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm.) May 31, 1930, No. 16853. [Class 29.] Absorption systems.-In a liquid circulating system for inert gas machines, of the kind in which a conduit is periodically sealed by liquid to create an excess pressure for effecting the circulation, a separate supply conduit for the sealing liquid extending from the same vessel as the pressure conduit is provided. A diagrammatic view of the circulating system is shown in Fig. 1, and the disposition with respect to the generator and absorber of a machine in Fig. 3. The generator 10 and absorber 13, Fig. I, are connected by a weak liquor pipe 25 and a strong liquor pipe 27. An inverted U-shaped pipe 16 in the generator has one end formed as a funnel 17 depending into the liquid and the other extending into a " pumping " chamber 15. A pipe 18 extends from the bottom of the generator to the end of the pipe 16 located below the normal liquid level in the pumping chamber, and a pipe 19 extends from the pipe 16 to the liquid seal or valve pipe 29, 20 and to a liquid supply pipe 22 for the seal formed as a coil 23. When heat is applied the gas entering the funnel 17 and pipe 16 forces liquid downwards in pipes 29, 22 and 18, and upwards in the annular space 30 of the pumping chamber until the liquid overflows into a vessel 24 and so by pipe 25 to the absorber. Eventually the pressure drives liquid out of the seal pipe 20 and the pressures are then equalized to allow liquid to flow up the pipe 18 to replenish the pumping chamber and up the pipe 22 to re-establish the seal. Preferably the conduit between the coil 23 and the limb 29 is slightly inclined upwards towards the end of the coil and is of larger bore, to ensure more certain sealing. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the pumping chamber 15 and seal supply pipe 22 are outside the generator, and the pressure pipe 16 connects with a dome 33 in the pumping chamber. The weak liquor rises from chamber 15 to vessel 24 and flows through interchanger 25 to absorber 13, and the strong liquor returns through pipe 27 to the top of the liquor space of the generator. The gas entering funnel 17 is mainly solution vapour, and if desired the pipe 20 may discharge into the absorber. The descending limb 29 is of wide bore, and in order to form the seal by a full stream of liquid a dam may be placed at the junction of the part 31 of the coil 23 with the pipe 19. Another arrangement is described in which the funnel 17 and the weak and strong liquor pipes are situated close together at the bottom of the generator.
