Abstract

676,796. Washing- machines. FISHER & LUDLOW, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1950 [Oct. 6, 1949], No. 25755/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 138 (ii). A clothes washing machine in which the articles can be subjected to a " hot " wash cycle wherein the temperature of the washing water is as high as can be obtained from the supply, or to a " warm " wash cycle wherein the temperature of the washing water is controlled at a selected level, is provided with means for automatically actuating the cold water inlet valve at the commencement of at least the first rinse period, during a " hot " wash cycle, so as to admit cold water for a predetermined time, hot water only being admitted thereafter during the remainder of the rinse period. The machine may be controlled through a timer mechanism and three rinse periods are preferably provided, an initial quantity of cold water being admitted at the beginning of the first two rinse periods only. The third rinse is carried out under warm conditions, i.e. the temperature of the final rinsing water is maintained at approximately 97‹ F. by volumetric or thermostatic control means. The invention is described as applied to the thermostatically controlled machine described in Specification 675,115, most of the subjectmatter of which is included in the present Specification. An additional cam controlled switch is provided to connect the cold water solenoid directly across the mains, and this switch closes for a short interval at the beginnings of the " soak " period and of the first two rinse periods to admit a small quantity of cold water to the tub. The selection of a " hot or " warm " cycle is made by means of a manuallyoperated switch, but according to the Provisional Specification this may be eliminated by using cams in the timer which arrange for separate " warm " and " hot " washing cycles. Specification 600,055, [Group XIII], also is referred to.
