[Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] A disc type eddy-current motor has at least two driving elements each comprising two electromagnets, the magnets of one element being supplied in quadrature from a polyphase supply to produce a driving torque, and the magnets of the other element being supplied alternatively from a polyphase or from a single-phase source to exert driving and braking torques respectively. By using four elements and connecting up to three elements in a braking relation, a range of nine speeds between 12.5 and 87.5 per cent of no-load speed can be obtained. Each element may act on a separate rotor.
