Abstract

554,869. Continuous production of water gas. STIMSON, E. E. Jan. 20, 1942, No. 815. [Class 55 (i)] A vertical suspension in steam of powdered carbonaceous material such as coal or coke is caused to react by heat from an adjacent vortex of powdered carbonaceous material burning in oxygen, air or air enriched with oxygen to form water-gas. The vortices may be formed alternately one above the other, or a plurality of vortices may be formed in one plane, a plurality of such planes being arranged one below the other. Steam and powdered fuel are introduced through inlets 11 and air or oxygen and powdered fuel through inlets 12 to produce the vortices shown in Fig. 2. Ash collects in a water cooled portion 5 at the bottom of the furnace, and the gases are withdrawn through a pipe 9 extending down the centre of the furnace and enclosed by a refractory jacket 10.
