554,114. Inductances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 31, 1942, No. 10733. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1941. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In a relay or other device having a middle winding 4 sandwiched between two windings 3, 5 connected in series, the number of turns of the winding 4 equals the sum of the turns of the windings 3, 5 and the number of turns of the winding 3 differs from that of the winding 5. The relative sizes of the windings 3 and 5 is calculated or determined by experiment so as to give the highest degree of inductive balance between the winding 4 and the winding 3, 5. This is important in telephone systems where the two windings are connected to the tip and ring conductors of the talking circuit and quiet speech transmission is essential. The theoretical considerations determining the proportion of turns of winding 3 to winding 5 are discussed and in one example the ratio was 2/3.
