Abstract

554,046. Preventing corrosion. BRITISH NON- FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, LIDDIARD, E. A. G., KENWORTHY, L., and FRAPWELL, S. A. Feb. 7, 1942, No. 1655. [Class 123 (i)] Corrosion of zinc or zinc-coated pipes or tanks in water systems, due to the solution of a minute amount of copper from other parts of the system, and subsequent deposition of copper on the zinc, is prevented by freeing the system from dissolved copper. Solution of copper may be prevented by maintaining a concentration of about 0.05 parts of zinc salt per hundred thousand parts of water. Water which has been in contact with copper or copper alloy may be caused to flow over a zinc surface, e.g., a filter containing zinc turnings, which is thereby corroded, before the water reaches the parts to be protected. The added zinc surface may be electrically connected to the copper or copper alloy to provide cathodic protection for the latter, e.g., by inserting short lengths of galvanised piping into a copper or copper alloy piping system, or by coating the ends of the copper pipes with zinc, or by inserting sleeves of zinc at regular intervals.
