Abstract

865,083. Preventing corrosion and incrustation. SPECTOR, D. April 2, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 11315/59. Class 123 (1) [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for cathodically protecting pipes, boilers, tanks, ships' hulls and other metal structures in contact with corroding liquids from corrosion and for electrolytically preventing scale formation on such structures consists of a cylindrical housing 3 closed by caps 5, 6 of insulating material and containing a direct current generator 15 having a commutator 16, the armature of the generator being mounted on a shaft 10 which passes out of the housing through a gland 14 in the cap 6 and carries at its end a propeller 11. The positive pole of the generator is connected at 19 to an anode of an inert material such as graphite or platinumcoated copper mounted in the casing 3 so as to be exposed to the liquid flowing through a pipe 1 in which the device is placed, whilst the negative pole is connected through a cable 21 to a roller 71 which bears on the said surface. Two rollers 7 mounted on arms 13 hold the device coaxially within the pipe, one of these rollers being driven through a gear train 8, 81, 811, 9 from the propeller shaft so that, in operation, with the propeller being turned by the liquid flow through the pipe, the device advances therealong whilst generating sufficient current to protect the pipe from corrosion and to prevent scale deposition thereon. In a modification, when the pipe is carrying oil, part of the current generated may be passed through a heating coil carried by the device to melt wax deposits, moreover the shaft 10 may be extended beyond the propeller to carry pipe scrapers or knives for the mechanical removal bf internal deposits. When used for the protection of ships' hulls the device 27 without the rollers 7 is towed behind the ship 26, Fig. 3, by a cable 28. Alternatively, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown, two devices are towed by cables or secured by fixed arms one on each side of the ship.
