Abstract

554,036. Knitting. SMITH, H. N., and SMITH, E. E. Sept. 12, 1941, Nos. 10242/41, 14895/41, 3858/42 and 11254/42. [Class 74 (ii);] A knitting machine having looping devices 4 each arranged to form a loop selectively in either direction successively through each of a series of loops held upon guard members 1 is adapted for fashioning or patterning by periodically changing the number of loops awaiting cooperation with the devices 4. The addition to or subtraction from the number of loops ds under the control of a Jacquard or other patterning mechanism. In one form of machine, two rows of pivoted guard members are provided, mounted in guide grooves in inclined beds and each member having a channel shaped end 2. An additional guard member may be introduced, or a guard member may be withdrawn, for fashioning, and two or more loops may be placed upon a single guard member. To facilitate the formation of the knitted loop, a member 40 is provided for each guard member 1 to accept temporarily the newly formed loop and to cast the old loop off the member 1, and to asssist in transferring the loops back to the guard members 1, plates 93 are provided to push outwardly the fabric already formed. A looping device 4 and a thread guide 5 co-operate with the members 1 in each bed and are mounted upon carriages movable step-by-step along the series of members 1. Jacquard or other patterning mechanism is also provided to determine the direction of rotation of each looping device 4, so that the direction in which a loop is drawn through a loop around any guard member 1 is controlled for patterning by purl knitting. To allow two or more loops to be drawn through a loop around a guard member, e.g., during widening, the bed containing the guard members may be shogged in the direction of the movement of the carriage supporting the looping device. For narrowing purposes the beds containing the temporary accepting members 40 may be shogged. The machine may be arranged to knit at one time either two separate pieces of fabric, or one flat piece by knitting first on one bed of members 1 with a particular thread guide, and then changing over the positions of the two thread guides so that the same thread is supplied to both beds, or tubular fabric. The positioning of the yarn guide is determined by patterning mechanism. Specifications 536,489 and 551,370 are referred to.
