Abstract

553,867. Pipe joints. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Oct. 4,. 1941, No. 12839. [Class 99 (i)] In a coupling for reinforced pressure hosecomprising a sleeve 1 and an insert 4, in which after contraction of the sleeve on the hose 5 and the insert there is a zone 2 of greater constriction of the hose material and a zone 3 of less constriction near theend of the insert, the interior of the sleeve is so formed prior to constriction that a space 6 around the hose between the zone 2 and the closed end of the sleeve is sufficient to receive the hose material displaced from the zone 2 towards the closed end on contraction. A second space 7 receives material displaced from both zones. The sleeve maybe thickened at the zones 2, 3, or of uniform. thickness; may have a third zone of constriction between the zones 2, 3; and may be flared at the open end 8. The sleeve and insert may be formed in one piece, or made separately and joined by pressure as described in Specification 540,491. Specifications 540,492 and 553,868 also are referred to.
