Abstract
553,351. Coating metals & alloys. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric X-Ray Corporation). Dec. 5, 1941, No. 15690. Addition to 542,665. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] In an enclosed bearing as set out in the parent Specification, the thin film of lubricating medium comprises cobalt and an alkaline metal, such as barium, condensed thereon. The combination of cobalt and the other metal may be formed by the successive vaporization and condensation of these two metals. If the working surface is composed of an alloy containing cobalt, e.g. a high speed steel containing 18 per cent. of tungsten 9 of cobalt, 4.5 of chromium, 1.75 of vanadium, 1 of molybdenum, and 0.77 of carbon, the remainder iron, the film is produced by condensing the alkaline earth metal on the surface of the cobalt-containing alloy.
