[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v)] [Also in Group XXVI] An internal-combustion or other engine comprises a number of cylinders b, c arranged parallel to the engine shaft a, which is provided with a drum d having a cam track e engaged by rollers k on crossheads carried by the piston rods g, and inlet and exhaust valves in the cylinder heads are actuated by cams controlled by reversing means. The cams n, o are carried by a disc m mounted on the engine shaft a and are connected by a link p pivoted to the shaft a ; the cam n is secured to a shoe q splined on the shaft a and engaged by a lever r actuated by a rod r' having a pin engaging a curved slot s in a hand-actuated reversing disc s'. The engine shaft a is hollow and may accommodate inlet or exhaust pipes or ducts.
