Abstract
552,912. Centrifugal separators. MAY, J., and BROWNLOW, R. S. Nov. 11, 1941, Nos. 14542/41 and 14645/42. [Class 23] A perforated rotary drum c carrying a filter bed a is closed at both ends and air is excluded, so that the discharge of the liquid through the drum operates, pumplike, to draw the mixture through the inlet provided by the hollow shaft b. When the drum is stopped and the end g<SP>1</SP> of the shaft g opened, the pressure in the surrounding casing i causes a back flow through the filter bed which dislodges the solid deposit and discharges it through the shaft g. When several drums are enclosed in one casing, they are stopped one at a time for discharging the solids and suitable valves are provided for this purpose. The filter bed may be a mixture of kieselguhr and silicon or quartzite or discs of paper or metal or a helical strip providing narrow filtering channels between adjacent convolutions.
