[Class 71] A high - vacuum condensation pump comprises an annular jet J discharging a stream of mercury vapour through an annular passage between an external condenser C and an internal condenser C<SP>1</SP>; the cooling water may be circulated bv inlet and outlet P', P<SP>8</SP> through the condensers in series or the condenser may be separate. Gas is drawn from the high vacuum end of the vessel V around the jet, which may also have an axial passage giving additional pumping space. Condensed mercury flows through the helical coil P‹ and pipe P<SP>10</SP> to the mercury boiler. A side branch P<SP>11</SP> leads to a backing pump.
