Abstract
<PICT:0881958/III/1> The heat exchanger 14 of a recompression evaporator receives brackish or saline water by way of a preheater 16 and delivers vapour at 2 to an axial-flow compressor 3 driven by a steam turbine 5, the compressed vapour being delivered at 7 to a condensing chamber of the heat exchanger. Exhaust steam from the turbine is discharged at I to the compressor inlet, at II to the compressor delivery or at III to the preheater 16. The compressor 3 and turbine 5 have a common outer casing (see Group XXVI) which may be mounted directly on the heat exchanger 14, the connecting conduits 2, 7 then being replaced by simple apertures in the respective casings.
