Abstract

1,125,103. Distillation apparatus of the vapour-compression type; desalination of sea water. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 23 May, 1966 ,[24 May, 1965], No. 21934/65. Heading B1B. [Also in Division F1] In a distillation apparatus, suitable for the distillation of sea water, the vapour flowing from the evaporator 1 through duct 5 is compressed in the last ejector pump 3j of an assembly of such pumps 3a ... 3j connected in cascade, the first pump 3a being supplied with high-pressure steam as compressive fluid, and the connections between the pumps being such that a fraction of the vapour discharged from each pump (except the last) is used as compressive fluid in the succeeding pump and that the remainder of the vapour discharged from each pump (except the first) is conducted through a line 4 to the suction inlet of the preceding pump. The non-returned vapour discharged from the last pump 3j is introduced into the heating coil 6 of evaporator 1, where it condenses; and the required distilled water is discharged from this coil. Steam at a pressure of 2,500 p.s.i.a. from a nuclear power plant may be supplied to the first ejector pump 3a. The mass of vapour led back to any pump may be the same as the mass of compressive fluid supplied to that pump. Also described is a housing divided by arch-shaped baffles into spaces, which device acts as five ejector pumps (see Division Fl).
