552,049. Heat treating alloy steel. BUDD INDUCTION HEATING, Inc. April 24, 1941, No. 5322. Convention date, April 26, 1940.. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII] A ferrous hollow cylinder, pipe or the like is made by hardening the inner zone 18, Fig. 2, of a cast or forged sleeve 16 preferably by an electromagnetic heating and quenching device 10, 14 as described in Specification 520,479, and then machining screw threads 24, Fig. 1, fins 22, &c. in the unhardened outer zone. A blank for making the cylinder of an air-cooled engine may comprise the alloy S.A.E. 4140 or a modification containing 0.5 per cent. of carbon, 0.55 of chromium, 0.75 of molybdenum, and 1 of silicon and the finished cylinder may have its temper drawn at 500‹ to 550‹F. or 350‹F. when the modified alloy is used. The blank 16 should preferably have a uniform cross section and extensions 28, 30 to ensure uniform depth of hardening.
