Abstract
527,842. Surface hardening pistons &c. BUDD INDUCTION HEATING, Inc. April 19, 1939, Nos. 11784 and 11785. Convention dates, April 23, 1938, and Nov. 16, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 72] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXII] Split pistons, piston rings, and like resilient bearing elements have only one face hardened to a substantially uniform degree through an annular zone adjacent thereto by electromagnetic induction heat treatment, the remainder of the element being unhardened and unaffected by the heat treatment and uniformly soft. Preferably the element is made from carbon steel containing manganese, phosphorus, sulphur, and chromium, so as to form an inner zone of martensite, and an outer zone of sorbite, with or without a relatively thin intermediate zone of troostite. The hardened zone may be made to vary in thickness circumferentially by asymmetric heating and/or quenching. The inner and outer surfaces of the element may be non-concentric.
