Abstract

486,172. Heat - treating; alloys. ANDREWS GRINDING CO., Ltd., H., and ANDREWS, H. July 3, 1937, No. 18548. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a method of correct ing ovality in cylinder liners, sleeves and like cylindrical articles which have become distorted in hardening or machining, one or more expanders or cramps which over-correct any ovality or distortion are applied to the liner or sleeve, and the liner &c. is heat-treated or tempered with the expanders or cramps in position. If the liner &c. is made of a metal which it is not desired to harden or of which the structure is not to be modified by heat treatment, the liner &c. after the application of the expanders &c. is heated to a temperature up to 450‹ C. which is sufficiently high to relieve stresses in the metal but is not high enough to modify its structure. An example of such a metal is an austenitic cast iron alloy containing 14-15 per cent of nickel, 5-8 of copper and 1À5- 3À0 of chromium, The expander shown in the Figure consists of a pair of blocks b, c having arcuate outer faces of a radius approximately equal to that of the liner and a stud d having right-hand and left-hand screw threads on opposite ends engaging screw-threaded bores in the blocks b, c. The centre of the stud is provided with a nut e for engagement by a spanner. Where a cylinder liner is distorted throughout its length two studs d may be provided which fit into bores in two arcuate bars of the same length as the liner. Instead of an expander an external cramp engaging the outside of the liner at two points and applied to the major axis of the oval liner may be used. The process may be applied to liners which have been quenched from 840‹ C. and tempered at 340-350‹ C.
