Abstract
551,432. Switches partly electromagnetic. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 16, 1942, No. 6661. Convention date, May 20, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] A heavy-current switch, suitable for on-load, transformer-tap changing, is so arranged that the electrodynamic effect of the current-loop reinforces the contact-pressure instead of tending to throw the switch open. The arm 8 is pivoted by a pin and slot connection to a bracket 7 and operated by a member 12 separated from the pivot and contact 9 by distances A, B, respectively, such that A is greater than B. The effect of the loop on the part of the arm between 12 and the pivot is thus greater than that between 12 and the contact 9 and assists the wear-accommodating spring 13 in reinforcing the contact-pressure. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the'spring acts between a fixed abutment and a point on the arm in line with and behind the contact. The later is connected to the bracket 7 directly by a braid 10 and conductor 11.
