Abstract

541,281. Switches, partly electromagnetic. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., GARRARD, C. J. O., and RANDALL, H. Aug. 19, 1940. Nos. 13189/40 and 3621/41. [Class 38 (v)] A contact-arrangement for a contactor or circuit-breaker comprises a movable arm 2 pivoted at 3, a fixed contact 1, and a knuckling contact 4 pivoted to 2 at 5 and initially engaging 1 at the point 6, such that the angle between the continuous lines a, b, is acute (not obtuse) and approaches a right-angle in the fully-closed position with contacts 1, 4 engaging over their entire surfaces. The current loop effect of 2, 4 thus supports the spring (not shown) biassing 4 away from 2, and overpowers the smaller throw-off effect indicated by the obtuse angle between the lines c, a. In Fig, 5, the contact 4 is pivoted to the fixed member 1 at 5 and initially engages the movable arm 2 at 6, the effect of the loop a, b, tending to increase the contactpressure.
