Abstract
550,951. Storage batteries. TAYLOR, P. W. July 21, 1941, No. 9202. [Class 53] [Also in Group XXII] In an accumulator, intended particularly for use in torches in substitution for a dry battery, the electrodes b, b<SP>1</SP> extend in opposite directions from the end walls of the casing a and are secured to these walls by material d cast into position to form a liquid-proof joint. The casing may be of ebonite, celluloid, glass, resin compositions such as polystyrene resin, or other suitable insulating material, and in the construction shown is formed with an internal flange f at one end, the other end being completely open. Fig. 6 shows the mould used for casting the metal d at the flanged end of the casing, comprising a core h with a slot to accommodate the electrode b, a sleeve n which surrounds the casing, and a block m with a pouring opening h. The electrode b projects from the top of the core, so that it is secured in the cast metal. The other electrode b<SP>1</SP> is secured in an end cap o in a similar way, and the cap is then sealed to the end of the casing with a suitable cement. The plates b, b<SP>1</SP> are spaced closely together, the interspace being almost entirely filled by a separator strip u which is formed with a longitudinal channel w and extends across the entire width of the casing. A similar strip u<SP>1</SP> is in contact with the surface of the plate b<SP>1</SP> opposite the filling aperture e. A limited quantity of electrolyte is used which tends to flow along the channels u<SP>2</SP> and to spread over the surfaces of the plates, which keeps it from the aperture e. In a modification, the body of the casing is formed of an open-ended lead tube, one end being closed by lead which is cast into position and holds one electrode, whilst the other end is sealed by a cap of insulating material, such as polystyrene resin, in the centre of which the other electrode is secured by lead cast into position.
