Abstract

531,237. Batteries. ALPHA ACCESSORIES, Ltd., and ADIE, W. G. (Ray-O-Vac Co.). Feb. 6, 1940, No. 2301. [Class 53] A dry cell is enclosed in a tubular metal casing to prevent expansion and leakage during use, the cells of the casing being turned in to retain closure discs or the end wall of the zinc electrode. The zinc can A, Fig. 1, is wrapped in paper 24 or other insulating material and the unit is placed inside a tubular sheet iron casing C. At the upper end an insulating cover 20 and at the lower end a resilient washer 23 are inserted and the two ends of the casing are turned over to retain the cell in place. The projecting end of the carbon may be fitted with a metal cap 19 having a small hole 21 to allow gas to escape through the carbon. The two poles of the cell formed by this metal cap and the base 15 of the zinc can. In another construction the cell itself is completely enclosed, Fig. 5 (not shown), insulating end pieces having contacts formed in them for external connection to the carbon and zinc electrodes. In a third construction, Fig. 8 (not shown), the protective casing is coated with insulating material and forms the container of the cell, a sheet metal zinc electrode then being used and making electrical contact with an insulated metal base.
