Abstract

550,709. Rope grips. WHITEHEAD, S. July 18, 1941, No. 9137. [Class 78 (ii)] Relates to rope grips of the kind comprising a pair of sliding jaws 9, 10 one operable by a helical or inclined cam 14 of coarse pitch to effect initial engagement of the jaws with the rope and also to effect quick release, the other operable by a helical cam 25, 26 of finer pitch so as to effect the final tightening of the jaws on the rope. According to the present invention the tightening cam comprises two co-axial annular cam surfaces 26, 27 on a rotary member 25 co-operating with a similar number of cam surfaces on the tightening jaw 10, the cam surfaces being all of equal pitch and those in each set being angularly offset from one another by an angle equal to 360, degrees divided by the number of surfaces in the set. In the construction shown the grip comprises a body 1 formed with end walls 2, 3 which take the thrust of the jaws 9, 10. The jaws are slidably mounted on a bolt 6 and are prevented from rotating thereon by means of flanges 13 engaging the sides of the base. The jaw 9 is provided with cam members 23, 24 co-operating with similar cams 21, 22 on a collar 14 which is rotatable on the bolt and has an operating arm 15 normally kept in the upright position shown, in which the jaw 9 is brought to the rope-engaging position, by a spring catch 17. The other jaw 10 has two co-axial cams (not shown) engaged by the cams 26, 27 on the rotary collar provided with operating handles 29, 30. When the collar 25 is rotated the jaw 10 is moved to grip the rope a. When the arm 15 is rotated in either direction, as by a stop on the track, the cam 14 releases the jaw 9 and the rope is released. The jaws are fitted with steel liners 11, 12. In order to prevent the rope, when released, from running on the bolt 6 a tubular liner 32 is mounted on the bolt in recesses in the jaws, and/or one or each jaw is provided with lugs 31 which bridge the gap between the jaws at a level slightly above the bolt.
