Abstract

Nipping-lever and like grip; skid; locking by frictional detents.-A track brake applicable to cranes, shed doors, &c. comprises tongs arms a pivoted at b to links c and having pivoted to their upper ends at f nuts e engaging left- and right-hand threads on a spindle d rotated by a sprocket wheel g, the spindle threads being low pitched so that the nuts are self-locking. Pivotally carried in the jaws at the lower end of the tongs are cams h which grip the rail m when the nuts e are forced apart by rotation of the sprocket g. These cams are so shaped that after application of the brake movement of the crane in either direction slightly rotates the cams h and causes them to grip the rail tighter owing to their increased radii. Springs k and rollers l are used to ensure symmetrical positioning of the jaws.
