Be it known that I, EARL S. Swiiirrz- BAUsi-i, a citizen ofthe United States, residing' at 'West Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Railway Rolling Stock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toc'ertain new and useful improvements in brakes for railway rolling stock, and has `particular reference to devices of that kind, wherein means is provided upon the rolling stock for grippingengagement withthe rails formingthe track upon which the stock fruns, whereby the rolling stock isjeffectively maintained or retained in a stationary position.
The primary object of the invention is to provide `a device 'of the above kind primarily adapted to be operated after the rolling, stock has beenbrought to a stop foi' preventingaccidental movement thereof, as distinguished from brakes adapted to bring the rolling stock to astop. Y*
Another' object of the invention is to provide a brake `of theabove'character which embraces the desired qualities of simplicity, and durability of construction, as wellv as eiiiciency in operation.
A further object is to provide a brake for railway vehicles embodying clamps carried at each side of the vehicle and manually operable means for simultaneously operating said clamps forV engaging the same with the rails or disengaging` the same therefrom, the clamps each embodyinga pair of cross pivotally connected clamping jaws mounted to swing in a direction transversely to the 'line of travel of the railway vehicle.
With the above general objects in view and others that will becomeappareiit as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists iii the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts,
hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying` drawings, and claimed.

F igure l is a top plan view of a truck forming part of a railway vehicle or rolling` stock and equipped with a brake constructed in accordance with the present invention.

The cross bars yG of the truck frame are respectively arranged adjacent the front and rear ends of the truck and connecting the inner ones of the pairs of side bars 5 inidway between their ends is a further cross bar 9 that is braced at its. ends as at l0, said Vbar 9 being disposed upon the upper flanges of the inner bars 5 and the braces l0 being` secured at their outer ends tothe lower iianges thereof, as shown clearly in Figure 2. f y The side frame bars 5 of eachV pair are rigidly connected intermediate their ends-by means of transverse brackets 11 that are arranged in adjacent spaced relation and whichV are preferably of channel form in vsection withv their iianges directed away from each other and secured to the webs of the side frame bars 5. A clamp is disposed between each pair of bracketsr ll 'and each clamp embodies a pair of vertical swinging jaws 12 which cross each other and which are mounted upon a pivot pin 13 that passes through the pairs of brackets l1 and thru the jaws 12 at their point of crossing. The lower end-s of the'jaws 12 thus depend at opposite sides of the ball of the rails Sas shown in Figure 2, so that tliey'may be swung toward each other for tightly grip ping the ball of the rail in a manner which will presently become apparent.
By means of the above construction, a`
pair of clan'ips is provided, one arranged at each side of the truck, and both arranged iny t 'ansveise alignment, the upper ends of the inner jaws being` disposed outermost, and the upper ends ofthe outer jaws being inner` most as shown in Figure 2. Ahorizontally swinging` hand lever'M is loosely pivoted and slidably connected as at 15 to the central portion ot' the transverse bar 9, preferably by pin and slot connection, as shown, and the short end ot this lever is attached, as at 1e, to the inner end ot a pair of links 1? and 18 that are respectively connected as at 1S) and 2O to the upper end ot the outer jaw ot the clainp at one side ot the truck and to the upper end ot the inner jaw at the other side ot the truck. At the opposite side ot' the pivot 15, the lever 14 has a pair ot links 21 and Q2 pivotcd thereto as at 23 at their inner ends, the outer ends ot said links 21 and 22 being respectively pivoted to the other jaws oiE said clamps. In the construction shown, the link 21 is connected to the upper end ot the inner jaw at one side of the truer; and
.the link 22 is connected to the. upper end ot the outer jaw at the other side of the true-k.
It will thus be seen that when the lever 14 is swung to the leftot Figure l, as shown, the several jaws are swung toward each other so as to tightly grip opposite sides ot the ball portions ot both et the rails 8, whereby the rolling stock is eiiectively retained againstnioveinent upon the rail as long as the lever 14: is held in this position. 0n the othervhand, when the lever 14 is swung to the right of Figure l, the jaws of the two clamps are caused to separate so as to disengage troni the rail and allow tree in'oveinent of the rolling,` stock thereon. For holding the lever 14 in either position, with .the clamps released or engaged, any suitable iueaus may be provided such as a downnf'ardly directed tooth or pawl 24; termed rigidly or otherwise suitably carried by the lever 1s', in position to engage the teeth torined upon the upper edge ot the transverse i'ralne bar G at that end of the tru-elf. toward which the lever projects. As the handle 11i is relatively long,` and projects at one end ot the railway vehicle, it inay be conveniently grasped 'for being swung to operate the clamp.

Minor changes inay be inade without departing from the spirit and scope ot the invention as claimed.

.in coinliination with a wheeled truck ot a railway vehicle, a cross bar mounted thereon and provided at a point midway hetween its ends with a longitudinally dis posed slot, a lever having a tulcruni pin which is loosely received in said slot, clainping jaws pivotally mounted upon the truck at the opposite ends of the cross loar and links pivotally connected at their inner ends with the lever and pivotally connected at their outer ends with the clampingjaw.
